FAQS FOR HIGH SCHOOL PARENTS

What is the Health Careers Opportunity Program?
The Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) helps youth achieve their dreams of going to college and becoming health care professionals. At the high school level, HCOP motivates youth to explore health careers, provides academic advising, and offers college success strategies workshops, an academic summer academy and links to health care-related volunteer opportunities. Our college retention program supports HCOP high school alumni who are currently enrolled in college health, pre-health or allied health programs.

What is the length of the program?
The high school program operates all year. HCOP after school workshops are held for an hour every other week throughout the school year. The summer academy, for rising high school juniors and graduated seniors, runs daily for six-weeks each summer.

What will the program cost me?
HCOP is a federally funded program. There is no cost for your child to attend.

Who teaches or leads HCOP workshops and Summer Academies?
HCOP workshops are lead by professional Program Coordinators and are provided by the Oregon Health Career Center (OHCC). Workshop leaders are trained by OHCC on our effective curriculum. Summer Aacademies are staffed by college professors and college-aged student mentors and resident assistants.

Who can participate?
Since HCOP is federally funded, each participant is required to be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, a first-generation college bound student AND/OR qualify for free or reduced lunch. HCOP students must also be interested in pursuing a career in healthcare.

Why should my child participate?

HCOP will have a positive impact on your child. HCOP students succeed in school, pursue college, and become healthcare professionals. Studies show that youth who participate in after school programs like HCOP are more likely to graduate from high school and go to college. Studies also show that people who go to college have higher paying jobs and keep those jobs longer! Through HCOP, your child will graduate from high school and learn how to get into and pay for college! HCOP will help them be successful in reaching their dream of becoming a healthcare professional!
